About Us : Company History

1979

Jim Petteys and Dave Grant formed a partnership to transport and supply premium hay products to the South-Eastern United States. They named their business the Western Hay Company.

 

 

1985

WHC begins shipping via the railways to the South-Eastern United States. WHC becomes the first consistent supplier of alfalfa hay for dairy use in Florida.

 

 

1986

WHC incorporates in the State of Utah becoming Western Hay Company, Inc.
   

1987

WHC begins shipping compacted (“pressed”) hay to maximize weight capacity in its railcars and containers.

 

 

1990

WHC opens an operations facility in Valdosta, Georgia. This facility remains a hub for servicing customers located in the South-Eastern United States.

 

 

1991

WHC begins the exportation of hay and other agricultural products to the Caribbean, Asia, Central and South America.

 

 

1992

WHC begins buying, selling and transporting cottonseed both domestically and internationally out of its Valdosta, Georgia facility, for the use as a feed ingredient in the dairy industry.

 

 

1993

WHC starts a private railcar fleet with 20 cars dedicated strictly to moving hay to the South Eastern United States.

 

 

2000

WHC begins supplying and transporting wood shavings for animal bedding out of Canada into the United States.
   

2000

WHC begins transporting Canadian Sphagnum peat moss with 7 dedicated railcars.

 

 

2001

Within one year, WHC increases the number of private railcars dedicated to transporting Canadian peat moss to over 100 railcars.

 

 

2001

A new facility is opened in West Palm Beach, Florida, to serve the South Florida hay market and peat moss customers.

 

 

2002

WHC begins producing and selling alfalfa cubes and pellets.

 

 

2002

WHC becomes the first exporter of American alfalfa for the dairy industry into the United Arab Emirates. WHC also begins the exportation of American wood shavings that are used animal bedding.
   

2004

WHC opens a new facility in Bayonne, New Jersey to service customers in the North East.

 


2004

WHC acquires Stanley Penn and Sons Feed, Inc. a retail feed outlet that serves the Thoroughbred industry at Belmont Park, Aqueduct Race track, and Saratoga Springs Race Course in the state of New York.

 

 

2005

WHC becomes the first exporter of American cottonseed into the United Arab Emirates.

 

 

2005

WHC’s private fleet of railcars, used for the transportation of hay, peat moss, cottonseed and other commodities, exceeds 300 railcars.
